Why Doesn’t ivvi Use AI to Summarise Lectures?
Why can AI summaries get in the way of learning?
We distinguish between AI that does the thinking and AI that clears the path for the learner to think. An automatic lecture summary compresses, filters and prioritises information for the student, removing the active selection and sense-making through which learning happens.
For students with dyslexia, this can be particularly harmful because it replaces the opportunity to process information in a form suited to the learner’s brain.
How is ivvi different from an AI summary tool?
When recording starts, ivvi:
- captures the audio;
- creates a synchronised transcript;
- builds a mind map in real time;
- extracts keywords from the original words;
- selects icons;
- identifies structure.
ivvi does not summarise, delete content, decide what matters or prioritise on the student’s behalf.
How do students choose what matters?
- Skip: move past material that is not relevant at that moment.
- Map: keep the keywords in the map.
- Quote: bring the exact words into the branch.
- Highlight: map and quote the content, then mark it so key moments can be filtered later.
Highlighting, filtering and choosing are part of learning rather than clerical busywork.
